There was usually only a single purchase that lasted for a lifetime. There was no maintenance on the product. Businesses experienced lossage of clientele and purchases. If he products would have failed, the companies would have made a better profit. Presently, products may be functional for only a few years instead of the mandatoric lifetime. Businesses proliferate due to more sales. Since there is a higher quantity of people, products should be functional for hundreds of years to make sufficient resources for everyone.
